But What If You Were the One You'd Been Looking For?

Why I Started Willow by Claire

For years, I searched for confidence, peace, and somewhere I finally belonged. It took me a long time to realize I wasn't really looking for a place. I was looking for permission to become Claire.

I grew up in a home where chaos was normal. There was no routine, no certainty, just going to bed each night wondering what tomorrow would bring. Would there be dinner? Would I have clean clothes? Would someone knock on the door looking for money?

At a very early age, I slipped into the role of carer. I cleaned the house, cooked meals, made phone calls, and organised appointments. Somewhere along the way, I learned that my own needs didn't matter.

How I was feeling wasn't important. My job was to make sure everyone else was okay because, for me, that's what safety looked like.

This way of living followed me into adulthood. I became a parent at just 18 years old, and without even realising it, I carried those same beliefs with me.

If I was tired, I still got up. If I was sick, I still got up. I didn't know how to rest because, in my mind, my needs didn't matter. My feelings weren't valid. You got up, got on with it, and carried everyone else first.

Years went by. I was always tired. I was always feeling unwell. Every day felt the same. I got up and did everything I could to make everyone else happy, except myself.

The truth is, there was no 'me'.

I was living on autopilot.

Looking back now, I realise the hardest part wasn't how exhausted I was. It was that I couldn't be present enough to enjoy my own life. At the time, I didn't have the words for it. I thought I was coping. But I wasn't really living... I was simply existing.

Then, in my early thirties, after what felt like a lifetime had passed me by, something began to change.

I started reading. I picked up self-help books. I searched for anything that might help me feel something other than numb.

More importantly, I started asking questions. But what if I could change? But what if I didn't have to stay this way?

For the first time, I began to wonder if change might actually be possible.

That was the moment the door began to open.

I realised I had forgotten about myself all those years. I had no idea who Claire really was. What did I enjoy? What foods did I like? Where did I want to go? What made me feel alive?

So I began the longest and most important journey of my life—the journey back to myself.

Slowly, I learned to trust my own voice. I learned that my needs mattered. My feelings were valid. I was worthy.

It didn't change in one day. I didn't wake up suddenly feeling peaceful, safe, or enough. And the truth is, I still have days when that inner voice—Willow—speaks loudly.

It tells me I don't matter. That I'm not enough.

The difference now is that I don't believe it in the same way I used to.

Little by little, I'm learning not to silence that voice, but to sit beside it. To reassure her that we're a team and that she doesn't have to carry everything alone anymore.

If I'm sick, I rest when I can. If I need a break, I take one when I can. I'm still a mother, a partner, a friend, a student, and life is still busy. But now I know something I didn't know before.

I matter too.

And that's why I created Willow,

With love,

Claire

If there's one thing I hope you take away from my story, it's this: you don't have to become someone else to be enough.

Maybe... just maybe... you were the one you'd been looking for all along. 🌿
